A few obsessions…

I always really enjoy when bloggers post a few of the things they are currently obsessed with so I thought I would do the same! There really is no unifying theme here other than they are all things I use/eat/see/do on a regular basis and wish I could use/eat/see/do more often. If you know me you’ve probably had to tune me out more than once while I lecture you about the amazing-ness of each of these.

Josie Maran’s Aragan Oil

This stuff is like nectar from the gods. Yea it’s a weird concept- here take this oil, it does magical things to your face, hair, nails, and fine china. I don’t know what makes this any different from olive oil or really any other oil BUT IT IS. I wake up looking tired and dry and gross… a few drops makes me look awake and bright. And kind of like this.

Extra Sharp White Cheddar Cheese

I mean… does this even need a description? It’s like what I’m pretty sure the baby of awesomeness and perfection tastes like. It’s the main ingredient in the BEST and most addicting macaroni and cheese ever, which literally could only be better if it actually contained crack. That mac n’ cheese recipe was the first one our Fat Kid Posse conquered. The Fat Kid Posse (consisting of Cindy, Ketakee, and Michael) started as a study group during 1L finals… but we spent most of our time discussing food (mainly cheese and various baked goods) and we quickly evolved into just a group of people who appreciated anything heavily caloric. This might explain our grades first year, and our expanded waist lines.

The Fun. Album “Some Nights”

This entire album is just UNBELIEVABLE. Yea, I know that I’m passenger #6,872,545 on that bandwagon. But I don’t care. I tend to be that person who listens to the same song OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. In high school I spent 6 months listening to The Goo Goo Dolls album Dizzy Up The Girl… fine it was closer to 9 months. Yea well this Fun. album may surpass that. I listen to it mostly when I’m studying but since I’m a law student that’s a large majority of my time (ok I’m totally lying, 2Ls don’t study), but I do listen to this album all the time.

Ray Ban Aviators

I got these over Christmas and pretty much wear them everywhere, and the fact that I love them is only partially motivated by the fact that Jen Aniston owns the same pair. They are instant cool and efficiently cover up a significant lack of makeup or allergy abused eyes. Added bonus:  I wear them as I walk to work in Beverly Hills and whenever I walk past Urth Caffe people always do a double-take thinking only someone really famous could be wearing such awesome sunglasses. A paparazzo took my picture once. True story.

American Cinematheque Screenings

I have always had an obsession with old films. For pretty much all of high school the only things I watched were TCM (Turner Classic Movies) and TGIF on ABC (Sabrina The Teenage Witch was AWESOME). The American Cinematheque keeps a slate of film revivals and special screenings going all year round, and with a theater in the heart of Hollywood and one in Santa Monica there’s always something awesome to see! Where else can you go to see a remastered version of Strangers on a Train, see Rudy literally WITH Sean Astin and Jon Favreau (who then invited us all out for drinks), and see My Week with Marilyn followed by a Q&A with Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh?! The work they do with preserving films and doing screenings of hard to find films is just amazing. Plus concessions are reasonably priced. Gotta love a Big Gulp sized Diet Coke for $3.

What are some of your obsessions???

Ok I couldn’t help it… one more Fun. song!

Kanye’s New Workout Plan- Pure Barre

I obsessively check “deal” sites like Groupon and LivingSocial every morning… terrified that I’m going to miss some awesome deal like the case of wine I bought for $25 or wake-board yoga. In one of my hunts I came across a LivingSocial for Pure Barre, $35 for 2 weeks of unlimited classes. Since a month of unlimited classes usually goes for $225 it was a pretty good deal, especially for something I have been wanting to try.

I’ve gotten pretty good at convincing Gillian to do things. Threatening to write an embarrassing blog post usually has that effect on people. And I’m happy this blog has a duel purpose.

So up we were at 6:15 am to make it to our 7 am class. We made our way down La Cienega to find the studio which was “behind the Subway.” We found it… and of course were there before the studio was even open. Soon a tiny woman who looked like one of those women who are posted as “fitness inspiration” on Pinterest rolled up in the most intense workout pants I’ve ever seen and with her hair in a giant top knot.

It really was BEHIND the Subway. Looked at bit sketchy at first.

We went into the studio, both expecting something small and modest. We were greeted with a beautiful carpeted studio and a storage room separate from the workout studio and the main “lobby” area where $12 no slip socks were sold along with various sweatshirts that looked like something from a high school Flashdance stage production.

We grabbed a resistance band, some 2 lb weights (we were told by another attendee that we would regret it if we used 5 lb weights… Gillian switched hers out haflway through. Guess they aren’t used to JACKED girls doing Pure Barre), and a small ball and sat in the carpeted studio.

Pure Barre is a mix of pilates moves and more traditional ballet exercises at a bar. We started with arms, moved to some ab/arm combos, did legs, glutes, and eventually ended with a 10 minute ab session. The whole class is done to some bumpin’ beats that even Gillian approved of, with plenty of stretching thrown in so as “not to get too bulky.” The goal seems to be muscle fatigue through small and controlled movements.

I had some issues picking up some of the moves (at various times I wasn’t quite sure what exactly I was suppose to be tucking) but I figure prowess will come with time. I expected the class to be full of Beverly Hills housewives and former USC communications majors that look like extras in a spring break movie. But was surprised that the class was mostly made up of young professionals (though I didn’t take a survey on undergrad and major) who didn’t completely make me feel like the actual elephant in the room. I also really liked that it wasn’t danced based. Since I have no rhythm and a poor short term memory anything based on repetition and dance (like kick boxing and walking while chewing gum) is pretty much out of my league.

I left sufficiently sweaty, though not as sweaty as I get during my normal 5 mile morning run (or like I did in Zumba classes in undergrad). While leaving the class and grabbing some Starbucks both Gillian and I agreed that it wasn’t the hardest workout either of us had ever done and we definitely needed some time to pick up some of the more nuanced moves. We particularly needed to work on making smaller movements as part of the philosophy of pure barre is using small/targeted movements, and well neither of us are very good at doing anything small. We both commented later in the day that while there was a bit of residual soreness neither of us felt like we had REALLY worked out.

Then we woke up this morning. While stretching for my run I realized that what I thought was a stomach ache was actually my abs BURNING. It made sitting up straight rather difficult. And reminded me that digesting a giant plate of pasta is not ab exercise.

All in all I enjoyed the class and Gill and I are going to finish out our 2 week stint by trying to attend at least 6 classes (3 a week). I might do their new member special which is one month for $99 (still a huge discount). It’s a great way for me to work in some weight lifting and muscle work into my running routine.

Have you tried any new workout routines?

We Totally Started the Fire

One of my favorite parts of Gillian’s blog (thatsg.com) is when she recaps her week… if only because I find it entertaining when she “forgets” to include me in our joint activities.

So I thought I would treat all of you (ie. Gillian and her parents) to what I’ve been up to this week. I’ll obviously skip over the boring “I went to work” “I went to class” “I cooked a lean cuisine for dinner” shenanigans. However,  I will say that my job is pretty freaking awesome and I got to sit in on the best phone call ever.

Most of the people who know me know that I am one of those people who is purposefully busy all the time. I am overly involved in on campus organizations at law school, give myself silly workout commitments that I feel guilty for breaking (except when I sit in bed all morning blogging), and generally don’t feel accomplished unless I’m running round like a chicken with my head cut off.

This week had a particular sense of urgency because the event I had been preparing for for months was going to be on Thursday- a big mentor event bringing together USC’s intimidatingly successful entertainment law alumni with members of the organization I run USC’s Entertainment Law Society (ELS). But more on that later.

I spent Monday making phone calls and harassing the assistants of our confirmed mentors. The one thing this whole process has taught me is that assistants are pretty much the most important people in the entertainment business. If they don’t like you, you’ll never get to their boss. So BE NICE TO ASSISTANTS… and flirt a little. Flirting always helps.

Tuesday was my mom’s birthday. My dad was out of town so my sister and I took my mom and our grandparents (my grandmother’s birthday is today!) out for dessert at The Melting Pot. We ordered the “Yin and Yang” (white and dark chocolate fondue) and the S’More (Milk chocolate, marshmallow, and graham cracker crumb fondue).

Some rice crispy treats, strawberries, brownies, and cookie crumb covered marshmallows yummmm!

Wednesday led into work and a stint in the library like a 1L. For those of you who aren’t in law school (… jealous) 2 and 3Ls pretty much compete to see how little time they can spend in the library. As an epic all day/night/weekend librarier as a 1L the fact that this was my first all day stint there is rather impressive. ANYWAY. This week is my week of networking for ELS. I had previously set up… and forgotten about… a student networking event with the graduate students at the cinema school and the entertainment focused MBA students. Thank God Steven and Ricky are awesome and picked up my slack and put together a KILLER mixer. I made friends with some rather emaciated looking producers from the cinema school, and with some rather country club looking Canadians who were “business” students. It was a great break from the library and I think I made some new friends for Sundance… as long as they don’t leave to drive to Utah at 2am again. This Princess only flies… Southwest. Those pretzels they give you are awesome.

Then a long came Thursday. I went for my usual morning run (part of my self induced fitness routine… 20 miles a week! Considering my roommate just got back from a single 11 mile run we’ll call that my baby steps) and went through every nightmare scenario in my head- what if NO mentors show up! What if the food is bad! What if my advisor starts calling me Banana again? What if one of the students drinks too much at the open bar and throws up on the head of Sony/Columbia pictures?!

Well I shoved my fears down and got to the venue 45 minutes early, because you know those uber luxury Beverly Hills hotels are totally known for slacking. I realized that our party was following a Victoria’s Secret Party, which is not useful information at all other than obviously I choose awesome venues. And I waited. Some of my board members showed up to help set up… aka get free drinks early.

I strategically told all the students (and the Dean) to arrive 30 minutes before the mentors… no one likes walking into an empty party. 20 minutes after the mentors were supposed to arrive and none had shown I had a mini panic attack. Luckily, my good friend Jamie (last year’s ELS president) was there to keep me calm and feed me wine. Then everyone started rolling in. I had forgotten that in the entertainment business 20 minutes late is half an hour early.

I won’t bore you with any more details of the event but suffice to say it was AMAZING. Venue- swanky. Attendees- engaged and maybe a little bit drunk. Food- Mac N Cheese cups. Dean- In love with us. It was hands down our most successful event yet… and I maybe cried a little bit out of relief. And the fact that I may never get to have those mac n cheese cups again.

Me, Jamie, and Dean Rasmussen with our awesome sign! (Jamie makes everyone look like a giant)

My VPs "The Michaels," me, and our advisor- John Schulman.

I left the event and returned home to where I met my good friend Morgan, and two of Gillian’s knuckle heads (and my favs) Matty and Bryan to have a little pajama wine party to try and make our way through the CASE of wine I bought last month. We were unsuccessful… but drunk and happy. Many Girl Scout cookies were eaten.

Friday I had scheduled a friend date with my favorite law school gunner Alex (thank you to Alex’s gf Jen for letting me borrow him!). A little background- Alex and I were in the same super section as 1Ls and I hated him for the first 4 months of school because he was either eating excessive amounts of food (2 muffins after lunch?! WHO ARE YOU?), inappropriate food (sushi at 10 am?! WHO ARE YOU?), or raising his hand to propose 15 minute long hypotheticals. Though by the time we had finished finals we were besties. Bonding over a shared love of constant eating, procrastinating, and that I had driven him home on Halloween while he wore a Lieutenant Dangle costume and we all saw his umm… dangle? He then ate/spilled french fries in my car. It was love.

We had a little snafu at the beginning of our date in that I thought we were leaving from our apartments (he lives in the building behind me) and he thought we were meeting in Westwood. I jumped in my car and made it down Santa Monica Blvd at rush hour in 10 minutes. I AM MAGIC. We then preceded to eat our weight in pizza at 800 Degrees Pizza. IT.WAS.AWESOME.

The restaurant is kind of like Chipotle but for pizza- you walk in and choose a base (margarita, blanca, or cheeseless) and add WHATEVER YOU WANT. The thin crust and 800 degree oven allow the pizza to cook in 1 minute and you have your personalized pizza by the time you pay! We heard it gets crowded so we met a bit early (about 6:20 after our missed connection) and had no problems. By the time we left though the line was out the door and down the block. I will DEFINITELY be going back. The pizza was so good we didn’t even have room for Diddy Reese (cookie ice cream sandwiches) afterward!!!

My pizza- Margarita (extra sauce), meat balls, grilled onion, pesto.
Alex's pizza- Margarita, eggplant, mushroom, grilled onion
Yes. We ate ALL the pizza. Deal.

Alex chomping down on his pizza. This is now the picture that comes up when he calls. You're welcome.

We then met up with Alex’s friend Paul and Paul’s sister Annie (who were both AWESOME) and we headed to the Wellsbourne on the West Side for some drinks, competitive shuffle board, and (literally) glass shattering foozball. We  eventually moved the party to Arsenal where we started the dance party and danced our butts off until we all hit our bed time at…. midnight. Hey, we’re busy students/professionals we have to draw the line somewhere.

I don’t have any video from our awesome dance moves but this is a pretty accurate reproduction:

This weekend I predict some more running, some outlining, and a few fun meals out with Gillian!

The A-B-C’s of ME!

A. Age: 24. Last night the busboy called me “ma’am”. I died a little.

B. Bed size: Queen. It’s pretty much my favorite possession. Made even better by the fact that I got it for an absolute STEAL from the Macy’s Furniture Outlet (unfortunately closed now).

C. Chore you hate: Folding laundry. I would literally sleep in my bed with the clean laundry all over it if it didn’t make me look like a hoarder. One semester my roommate in my sorority, Krisse, used to put my laundry away for me. She was a great roommate.

D. Dogs: I was super afraid of dogs when I was little. Now I can’t wait to have one. When I finally get a yard I want a husky named Atticus or Learned Hand, something stately and lawyerly. But I also really want a beagle and a french bulldog (brindle colored).

Atticus... or Learned Hand

Atticus... or Learned Hand

E. Essential start to your day: Cereal and tea. I could literally eat cereal for every meal of the day. Usually when I go grocery shopping it’s because I’m out of milk. I like to mix it up but I’m currently working through some honey nut chex… not as good as the cheerios but gets the job done.

F. Favorite color: Purple. But I’ve been growing rather fond of green recently.

G. Gold or silver: Silver. I’ve had to force myself to expand my gold jewelry because I have some outfits that just look better with it. So last week when I found a pretty multi chain gold necklace super on sale I grabbed it. Then the sales person informed me (after I purchased the final sale item) that it was Kardashian Kollection (I’m not sure collection should be spelled with a K there but since it’s the Kardashians and they are the most annoying people… ever… lets say that’s right). I still have convinced myself I won’t get struck by lighting if I wear it.

H. Height: 5’4″. I’m the shortest person in my ENTIRE family by almost 3 inches… I’m also the only person with blue eyes. It really reinforces that “milk man” rumor my family was always joking about.

I. Instruments you play: None. I did play a mean recorder in 5th grade though. I KILLED “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

J. Job title: Law student. Intern at Scott Free Productions. Awesome blogger! (Too soon?)

K. Kids: I love kids. I often waste time looking at the “adorable kids” posts on TheBerry. I want 3!! Though considering I won’t get married till I’m 64, I may have to settle on being the really cool aunt.

L. Live: West Hollywood, CA! I love my apartment! It’s huge, comfy, close to shopping/bars/restaurants/drag shows.

M. Mom’s name: Kim. NOT Kimberly. My grandfather got into a fight with a nun about that.

N. Nicknames: Jenn. JDubs. Westy. I had a friend in undergrad call me Westicles. He’s not my friend anymore. KIDDING! Love you Cory!

O. Overnight hospital stays: None. I hate needles and hospital stays means needles. I can only have children when they figure out how to give an epidural orally.

P. Pet peeve: Ignorance. Of every kind. People who refuse to do things for themselves. Flakiness.

Q. Quote from a movie:

Marie (Lauren Bacall): You know how to whisper don’cha Steve? You just put your lips together, and blow. (I think this is partially because this is when she and Bogey met <3)

Rick (Humphrey Bogart): Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world- she walks into mine.

R. Right or left handed: Right-handed.

S. Siblings: Younger sister- Christine.

Christmas card a few years ago. Repping the Pac 10!! (now 12)

T. Time you wake up: On weekdays- between 6:45 and 8 (depending on if I go running); weekends- between 8 and 9.

U. Unlikely to hear me say: ¨OMG I’d LOVE to try your fish and portobello sandwich covered in guacamole!”

V. Vegetables you dislike: Broccoli and eggplant. Yuck.

W. What makes you run late: Breakfast. When I’m getting ready in the morning I can skip a shower (sorry world), makeup, and matching shoes. But I can never walk out the door without at least grabbing something.

X. X-Rays you’ve had: Lots for my teeth (2 root canals in middle/high school due to sports injuries), and a bunch for my wrist because even after surgery it wouldn’t heal correctly.

Y. Yummy food you make: I really love making homemade oreo cookies! Usually from this recipe. It’s amazing making something so simple from scratch can make it THAT much better but these are truly awesome. I do a lot of baking. I’m sure I’ll post a bunch of it here! OH and my AMAZING mac n’ cheese… it’s lethal (in the best way). Recipe here.

Oreos on the left! This was during my first experiment with them, while also making cookie dough cupcakes, and drinking wine with my best friend Megan (obvs).

Sharp white cheddar, gruyere, pecorino Romano. CANNOT go wrong!

Z. Zoo- favorite animal: Always love the big cats! And the giraffes! And the dolphins… but usually need to go to an aquarium for that!
